Activated carbon is a unique renewable resource. After the adsorption capacity of granular activated carbon reaches saturation, it can be regenerated at a strictly controlled high temperature to restore the adsorption capacity and be recycled again without the need for landfill or incineration. This process is called activated carbon regeneration. The strictly controlled high temperature ensures that the pollutants on the waste carbon are completely eliminated, and the activated carbon itself is not overburned.
The quality of the regenerated carbon and the number of regenerable cycles, depending on the quality of the saturated carbon, include the following parameters: Density, particle shape, size, hardness, quality of the starting activated carbon, loading and characteristics of organic pollutants, precipitation of inorganic minerals, and the length of time the activated carbon has been used online all affect the regeneration results. Compared with other types of granular carbon, bituminous coal-based briquette granular activated carbon can usually provide a longer service life in various processes.
High-quality granular charcoal is more efficient to regenerate and reduces fresh charcoal make-up. For example, bituminous coal-based briquette granular activated carbon has the characteristics of high physical strength, which makes the loss of shipping, transportation and regeneration process much lower than that of direct activated carbon and other types of granular carbon. Generally, the regeneration loss of high-quality bituminous coal-based briquette granular activated carbon is about 10%, while the direct activated carbon and other types of granular carbon can reach 30% to 40%.
